Public Awareness Resources & Information

Soroptimist’s public relations activities and resources are conducted/prepared by headquarters’ communications department, which facilitates the flow of information both internally and externally. Headquarters has several resources to help clubs achieve their public relations goals.

Sample publicity materials for Soroptimist programs can be found in the Program Resources & Information section.

General information

Tools and templates for clubs to customize with specific information and contact details:

Graphic Identity and Style Manual
This manual helps to foster federation-wide unity and accuracy with regard to writing and design. Soroptimist staff and members should refer to the guidelines in the manual to understand how to use Soroptimist’s visual or graphic “identifiers” and new logo; communicate effectively through proper design; and reach target audiences through the federation magazine and website.

Exhibit Guide: Exhibiting at events and conferences, especially those targeted at women, is a great way for clubs to market Soroptimist to the public; increase awareness of all the things Soroptimist does to improve the lives of women and girls; and attract potential members. The Exhibit Guide provides clubs and regions with tips and resources to achieve these goals and to make their exhibitions a success.

Media Kit: A media kit is a folder of information that helps a reporter write an accurate story by providing him/her with information and facts about Soroptimist, a club, and/or a region. Having a quality media kit is a great way to help generate publicity for clubs and their projects. But an inadequate media kit is just as bad as not having one at all! Read Media Kit 101 to find out what to include in your club’s media kit.

Taking Good Photos: Good photos not only attract the eye, but tell a story. SIA always needs photos of club activities for use in Best for Women magazine, on the website, or in the latest brochure. After all, it's the photos that show club members working to improve the lives of women and girls that really portray the organization and its unique mission. Read SIA’s Guide to Taking Good Photos to learn how to take a picture that leaves a lasting impression.

Speeches: SIA developed a general speech to help members spread the news about our mission and programs.

PR FaxBack service: This service enables club and region public relations chairs and committees to receive instant advice and suggestions on time-sensitive media materials, such as news releases, letters to the editor, public service announcements, fact sheets, brochures, etc. Members can fax materials with a PR FaxBack cover sheet explaining the purpose of the materials to (215) 893-5200 for review. The materials will be faxed back with any changes or comments noted. This service is available in English only.

New club publicity: This service enables new clubs to receive publicity about their chartering. Upon chartering, clubs will receive a special form from SIA that they can complete and return to Public Relations Manager Kamali Brooks (kamali@soroptimist.org), who then uses the information to send a release announcing the new club to the local media.

Soroptimist Best for Women magazine serves as SIA’s official publication and the primary internal communication vehicle for members. The award-winning magazine, published in various forms since 1931, is mailed to members four times a year. Its content includes feature stories about women’s issues and Soroptimist programs; updates on Soroptimist efforts; and recognition of Soroptimist accomplishments. Submissions about members and worthwhile women- and girl-focused club projects are encouraged. The magazine not only serves as a valuable resource to members, it also should serve as an important tool for club public relations efforts. Gift subscriptions to local libraries, dentist and doctors’ offices, businesses, hospitals, schools, domestic violence shelters and women’s centers, community officials, guest speakers and Women’s Opportunity Award recipients educate and inform other audiences about Soroptimist.

“PRofile” magazine article: Included in each issue of the magazine, this article educates members about what public relations entails and how it benefits the organization as a whole. The article also helps clubs realize the public relations potential of their own activities.
